Title: Intelligent reflecting surfaces for 6G wireless systems
Abstract: The current 5G technologies such as massive MIMO and mmWave are based on large antenna arrays and the use of high frequencies. They need many expensive and power-consuming radio frequency chains, which consist of amplifiers, mixers, filters, and signal converters. Researchers have started looking for new solutions that reduce cost and energy consumption. Intelligent reflecting surface, which uses passive reflective elements instead of active radio frequency chains, is a cost and energy-efficient solution to improve the wireless system performance. It is being envisioned as a key technology for the 6G wireless communication systems. This talk will introduce the concept of the intelligent reflecting surface and its channel model. Will provide a comparison with the existing technologies such as cooperative communication and backscatter communications. Theoretical results that demonstrate the significant performance gain will be shown. Will briefly discuss the progress in the practical implementation. I will end with a brief introduction to the other multiple-antenna technologies that are being actively considered for next-generation wireless standards.
Biography: Dr. Sarvendranath Rimalapudi received his Bachelor of Technology from the National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal in 2009. He received his Master of Engineering and PhD from the Department of Electrical Communication Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 2012 and 2020, respectively. From 2012 to 2016, he was with Broadcom Communications Technologies Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore, where he worked on the development and implementation of algorithms for LTE and IEEE 802.11ac wireless standards. His research interests include wireless communication, multiple antenna techniques, spectrum sharing, and next-generation wireless standards.
Title: Design Thinking Case Study in a pandemic like COVID 19
Abstract: COVID 19 presented itself in Jan/Feb 2020 as respiratory distress. When the principles of design thinking were applied to the problem statement "Which other organ systems can get affected due to COVID 19", an interesting pattern appeared. We will talk about that pattern and the thought process that enabled it.
