Research on Predictive Controller Design and Sensorless Technique for AC Motor Drives

Abstract:

The permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) has become more and more popular due to its high power density, high efficiency, small size, and easy control characteristics. The controller design and rotor position estimation of the PMSM have been investigated for nearly 30 years at Department of Electrical Engineering, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. In this seminar, the current research focuses on permanent magnet synchronous motor drives are introduced, including: matrix-converter-based PMSM drive systems, predictive controller for sensorless PMSM drive systems, micro-hand control systems using micro-PMSMs, and rotor position estimation techniques.

The underlying principles of the current research developments are discussed first. Then, details of implementation methods and experimental results are provided to show the correctness and feasibility of the proposed concepts.

Speaker Biography:

Tian-Hua Liu received the B. S., M. S., and Ph. D. degrees from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST), Taipei, Taiwan, in 1980, 1982, and 1989, respectively, all in electrical engineering.

From August 1984 to July 1989, he was an Instructor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. He was a Visiting Scholar in the Wisconsin Electric Machines and Power Electronics Consortium (WEMPEC) at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, from September 1990 to August 1991, and in the Center of Power Electronics Systems (CPES) at Virginia Tech from July 1999 to January 2000.

From August 1989 to January 1996, he was an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, where since February 1996, he has been a professor. He served as Department Chair of Electrical Engineering Department from 2007 to 2009, Dean of Applied Science College from 2009 to 2011, and Dean of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science College from 2011-2015. He is an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, an IEEE Senior Member, and an IET Fellow. He served as Chairman of IEEE IES Taipei Chapter from 2011-2013, and he is Chairman of IEEE IAS Taipei Chapter.

Currently, he is a Visiting Professor at The University of Auckland, and a Distinguished Professor at NTUST. His research interests include Motor Drives, Power Electronics, and DSP-based Control Systems.
