Preamble

Mass wasting is highly a susceptible event in the regions of Western Ghats in Kerala. Such redistribution of rock, sand, debris and other materials leads to disaster especially in a State having a third position in the population density in our country. The incidence of unabated rain during August 14 - 16 of 2018 led to the unprecedented number of landslides in three districts: Idukki, Wayanad and Thrissur in the state of Kerala, caused a death toll about sixty and a heavy loss of cultivating land and severe damages to flora and fauna. Geological, geomorphologic and anthropogenic causes along with heavy rain as a trigger resulted for more than 600 landslides in the state. The dominant cases were Debris flow and the remaining ones were Slump, Landslip, Rock falling and a new one in the class viz., Soil piping. The awareness and preparedness are the most effective prevention and mitigation measures against possible threats of landslides. This symposium is expected to provide deliberations on causes of landslides, mitigation and precautions.
