2. Upcoming NSW Events
1. Ethics for the 21st Century
About: Ethics is the philosophy of human conduct. How should we act? That's the question of ethics. Throughout most of history, the repertoire of actions available to us was very limited, as was their reach and complexity. Likewise, power structures were largely independent and trade was slow, which contained the impact of actions in both space and time. Today we have a globalised economy run by a network of cybersystems comprised of people, software, data, algorithms, AIs, companies, and very few modern empires whose tentacles touch billions of people in over 100 countries. So, what is ethics today, and what will it be in the future? If we as a civilisation want to flourish in this century, we have to understand which actions will take us there. This talk will reflect upon this question and indicate a few paths for reframing our understanding of ethics for the 21st century.
Speaker: Tiberio Caetano
Date: 22 August 2018
Time : 6 – 7pm
Location: University of NSW (Kensington)
More information: https://meetings.vtools.ieee.org/m/174519
2. JILS - Young Professional Achiever Lectures (Appreciating the scientific contribution from our Young Professional members)
Topics:
Developing a Novel Ablation Modality for Atrial Fibrillation
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common chronic heart rhythm disorder, increasing the risk of stroke, dementia and heart failure by two- to five-fold. Catheter ablation of cardiac tissue aims to electrically isolate AF triggers. Tissue ablation using synergistic electroporation and electrolysis has demonstrated early preclinical success in cancer treatment and presents an exciting opportunity in cardiac ablation.
Luke Zhao (University of Sydney)
Wastewater Management – An IOT Approach
This lecture presents a novel solution to improve the current wastewater network management procedures employed by Shoalhaven Water. Also a prototype end device has been developed to solve associated problems with the current method of testing sewer pumping station pump performance, in terms of achieved flow rate, for quality control and quality assurance.
Adam Drenoyanis (University of Wollongong)
A Smart Sensing System for Early Detection of Osteoporosis
This presentation will give a short introduction on osteoporosis and bone health and then a brief explanation of the development of a smart portable PoC device for early detection of bone loss.
Nasrin Afsarimanesh (Macquarie University)
Date: 23 August 2018
Time: 6:00 – 7:30PM
Location: Chatswood
More information: https://meetings.vtools.ieee.org/m/170256
3. Introduction to Standardised Nursing Terminology and Classification Systems
Centre for IT-enabled Transformation (CITT) and IEEE NSW Computer Society Joint Research Seminar
Abstract: Nursing is a scientific discipline, has a unique body of knowledge. Standardized nursing terminology and classification systems identify key components of the nursing care process and organize these components into a coherent structure which represents the knowledge of nursing discipline. Standardized nursing terminology and classification systems have been widely used in nursing practice, education, research, and implemented for developing health information systems for planning, documenting, and evaluating nursing care. This presentation will present an introduction to standardized nursing terminology and classification systems, and the current state and challenges associated with using these standardized nursing terminology and classification systems.
Date: 29 August 2018
Time: 1:00 – 2:00PM
Location: University of Wollongong
More information: https://meetings.vtools.ieee.org/m/176164
4. JILS - Voltage Measurement and Harmonic Analysis Based on Josephson Voltage Standards
About: Josephson voltage standards take advantage of the ultimate accuracy of the quantum Josephson effect to produce voltage signals with perfectly known characteristics. They have been in common use dc voltage measurements since the 80s. More recently their operation has been extended to the measurement of ac voltage.
At the National Measurement Institute Australia, we have developed a number of Josephson voltage standards for dc and ac voltage measurements and extended their operation to spectrum analysis.
This presentation will (a) explain the operation of the quantum voltage standards, (b) describe how they can be used in dc and ac voltage measurements and spectrum analysis, (c) discuss the relevant measurement errors and (d) explain the implications of the redefinition of the International System of units (SI) to voltage measurements.
Speaker: Dr Dimitrios Georgakopoulos of National Measurement Institute
Date: 13 September 2018
Time: 6:00 – 7:30PM
Location: Chatswood
