1. Message from the Chair
Dear IEEE Member
This is your last chance to be a part of a new major initiative aimed at uniting all our members and technical societies for a free dinner, networking and exhibiting products/services/technologies etc. Currently we are at 192 registrations, so it is going to be a great event. Don’t miss out and don’t miss out on the opportunity on exhibiting at the simple cost of a donation. Registration closes on the 7th. More information: http://sites.ieee.org/nsw/ieee-unite-2018/
The 24th of August also marks the last day (final extension) for research and practitioner submissions for IEEE TALE2018, the flagship Asia-Pacific education conference of the IEEE Education Society. The conference is on track to be the biggest TALE conference to date, so please if you are interested in making a difference in education this is your last chance to submit. The practitioner stream does not require research papers. More information about the conference: https://tale2018.org
This month is also the last month to apply for the NSW IEEE Volunteer Awards. If you have made a positive contribution to the IEEE or if you know someone please nominate. Great work should be recognised. Awards will be presented at the section AGM in November. More details: http://sites.ieee.org/nsw/awards-recognition/
A big thank you to our student branches for being very active over the year. They have really been putting up some great events. If you are a student member, be sure you get involved in the branch as that is how you unlock real value from IEEE membership. We have also had a few student technical chapters created over the last 2 months and this is such a positive thing to do and I congratulate all students involved in doing this.
Also, we have IEEEXtreme 12.0 registrations opening soon. This is a 24hour problem solving/coding competition for undergraduate and postgraduate students with an expectation of having 5,000 teams participate this year. Last year teams from NSW dominated nationally, and we also had a group of first year students come 32nd in the world! Talk to your student branch for more information. If your university does not have a branch please contact our Student Activities Coordinator to start a discussion of starting one up. Email: arslan.kiyani@gmail.com
Over the last few months I have been trying to create a register of IEEE industry/business members willing and available to integrate their experience into universities. Currently, we only have had 3 people register. Supporting universities and sharing knowledge is a great way to give back and I really encourage people to sign up. See the opportunities section for more information.
At Monday's section meeting we will be spending the second hour looking at the responsibilities of various committee members and looking to refine them to maximise effectiveness and to identify strengths, weaknesses and gaps. Feel free to come along and add your input. Meeting details at the end of this newsletter.
Please explore the opportunities being provided by the section this month and add value to your IEEE membership.
Please feel free to reach out to me with any suggestions or comments. Have a great August!
Sasha Nikolic - Chair, IEEE NSW Section

1. Women in Physics Public Lecture
About: The guest speaker is Dr Ceri Brenner. Dr Brenner studied physics at Oxford University before completing a PhD in laser-solid interaction physics with University of Strathclyde while based at the CLF. Her PhD project was funded by the LIBRA consortium studying laser-driven ion acceleration for applications. She has since become a physics-engineering-business hybrid with a passion for developing laser-accelerator technology that tackles grand challenges. She specialises in using petawatt-class lasers to generate bright flashes of ions, x-rays and neutrons and is pursuing the development of applications of this technology such as non-destructive imaging and inspection in the nuclear, aerospace, security and medical sectors or mimicking space radiation for space technology component testing. She is a senior application development scientist for high power lasers and has a joint appointment between STFC's Business and Development Directorate at the CLF. Ceri was awarded the 2017 Institute of Physics Clifford-Paterson medal for the application of physics in an industrial context. 2. Joint Institution Lecture Series Riding the Data Train to the Digital City
About: Cities are facing considerable challenges today with megatrends such as urbanisation and population growth impacting the way our cities function. The data available to us is increasing exponentially and is a relatively untapped resource that can be leveraged in facing these challenges.
Data analytics in the rail industry is being increasingly used to optimise the transport network, in particular for the urban environment. Having an intelligent transport system is a critical step in facing the heightened population density in cities and continuing to move people safely and reliably. Resilient cities are holistic systems, and the solutions to these challenges should also take a holistic view. Digitalisation approaches used in transportation can be shared with other sectors, and by working together as an urban system, an intelligent and digital city can grow to meet current and future challenges. We invite you to join us in riding the data train to the digital city.

4. Ethics for the 21st Century
About: Ethics is the philosophy of human conduct. How should we act? That's the question of ethics. Throughout most of history, the repertoire of actions available to us was very limited, as was their reach and complexity. Likewise, power structures were largely independent and trade was slow, which contained the impact of actions in both space and time. Today we have a globalised economy run by a network of cybersystems comprised of people, software, data, algorithms, AIs, companies, and very few modern empires whose tentacles touch billions of people in over 100 countries. So, what is ethics today, and what will it be in the future? If we as a civilisation want to flourish in this century, we have to understand which actions will take us there. This talk will reflect upon this question and indicate a few paths for reframing our understanding of ethics for the 21st century.
Speaker: Tiberio Caetano is Co-Funder and Chief Scientist at Ambiata, and Adjunct Professor at the University of Sydney. Prior to that he spent 10 years as a machine learning researcher at NICTA and held adjunct academic positions at the ANU and UNSW. He has published extensively at the top machine learning venues. His research interests revolve around machine learning, causal inference and ethics. He is currently focused on reconceiving the field of ethics and moral philosophy beyond "human behaviour" so as to include the agency of more general systems, such as AIs, cybersystems and networks and markets of cyberagents. This program has the practical goal of equipping AI and cyber systems with the capacity of ethical conduct towards humans and sentient beings. He is currently working on setting up a new research institute to pursue that goal.
Date: 22 August 2018
Time : 6 – 7pm
Location: University of NSW (Kensington)
More information: https://meetings.vtools.ieee.org/m/174519
5. JILS - Voltage Measurement and Harmonic Analysis Based on Josephson Voltage Standards
About: Josephson voltage standards take advantage of the ultimate accuracy of the quantum Josephson effect to produce voltage signals with perfectly known characteristics. They have been in common use dc voltage measurements since the 80s. More recently their operation has been extended to the measurement of ac voltage. At the National Measurement Institute Australia, we have developed a number of Josephson voltage standards for dc and ac voltage measurements and extended their operation to spectrum analysis.
This presentation will (a) explain the operation of the quantum voltage standards, (b) describe how they can be used in dc and ac voltage measurements and spectrum analysis, (c) discuss the relevant measurement errors and (d) explain the implications of the redefinition of the International System of units (SI) to voltage measurements.
Speaker: Dr Dimitrios Georgakopoulos of National Measurement Institute
