IEEE Pune Section Monthly Updates- July 2018

Dear IEEE Members,

Our section will be organizing PuneCon 2018, an International Conference on Data Science and Analytics on 30th Nov, 1-2 Dec 2018 along with Symbiosis Institute of Technology. The preparations for this event are in full swing. We have got quite a few eminent researchers, academicians and industry experts as advisors to the conference. Also we have lined up some very good experts to conduct pre conference tutorials. I would request you create awareness about this event and to support and encourage the organisers; it is important that we make this flagship event of the section a big success.

I would like to congratulate the WIE affinity group for organizing the WIE Symposium at I2IT, Pune. It is very encouraging to see our women engineers lead and contribute to learning and sharing and I would like to scale and sustain this effort with support from industry partners. We got a very good feedback from the participants of the symposium and we will follow up on their asks to engage more professionals and build up on the momentum.

The Pune Section had the privilege of hosting the IEEE India Council members at Pune for their quarterly review meeting. TCS Pune Sahyadri Park campus was the host for this meeting. Earlier that day the IC members were present at the awards ceremony of the Late Shri Pralhad  P Chabbria awards. We appreciate the partnership of the Hope foundation for working closely with us to institutionalize these awards. Congratulations to Ms Jayati Vijayawargiya  and  Dr. Soma Biswas  for winning the awards.

We have been making steady progress on the SIG-Affordable Agriculture and have seen quite a few collaborations working out in this context.

I had also met Dr R A Mashelkar to update him on the initiatives of the Pune Section and have sought his guidance and support, which he has kindly agreed. Dr Mashelkar spoke to me on the need to look at the theme of "Climate Literacy" and how we can educate ourselves and the community on the impact of our actions on the environment and climate change.

During the quarter, we also had the opportunity to meet with two of our IEEE stalwarts Mr F C Kohli (in context of affordable agriculture and the theme of education) and Mr D M Tagare (on the topic of how to leverage industry experts effectively). Both Mr Kohli and Mr Tagare are 94, and continue to be a big source of inspiration for all of us - and more commendable is how they keep themselves informed about the latest in technology and how to leverage IEEE effectively for continuous learning and developing communities and forums.

IEEE elections for the year 2018 are round the corner.  It was observed that in the past, our section’s voting percentage has been very low.  Request all voting members of Pune to exercise their voting rights and contribute to the process. The voting window starts from 15th August 2018.

Best regards,
Dina
