June IEEE Section Meeting "Engineers and Ethics"

- Two Hours PDH credit toward PE certification in the Ethics Category will be given to those who attend.

Talk:
The talk will start with a review the ethical standards that apply to design professional and discuss their key points. We then move on to examples of real life cases to help the attendees get a flavor of the many ethical issues that arise in the judicial system. The topics will be drawn from the following:
Topic: Ethical Implications of self driving vehicles.
Topic: AI issues for ethical product design.
Topic: What do you do when you know management is violation personal information (ie Facebook selling info without customer's knowledge).
Bring your attention and questions for an evening of learning.
Bio:
Steve Nelson is a Shareholder in the Litigation and Risk Management Practice Group at Von Briesen & Roper in Milwaukee, WI. Steve has extensive experience in litigation and concentrates his practice in commercial litigation including construction, professional liability defense , civil and business disputes, contracts and lease disputes, toxic tort, OSHA counseling and citation defense, personal injury defense, product liability, and Wisconsin fair dealership law. He has litigated on behalf of clients involved in complex construction matters including tunnel and sewer construction, building construction, highway construction and matters involving professional negligence.

Talk:
The talk will cover several areas of interest to Consultants/Entrepreneurs:
Entity Selection for New Business:
the liability implications of Sole proprietorship, Partnerships, Limited liability companies and Corporations/S-Corps including the tax implications of different entity structures.
Social Security implications will also be discussed:
Income levels in which social security is taxed, and Wisconsin handling of taxing social security
.
The Tax Cuts & Jobs Act includes several things that will have an impact on individuals: New tax rates, Changes in standard deductions, Personal exemption changes, Deductibility of state on local taxes, ACA Individual mandate
. In addition, there will be an impact on business owners including: Corporate tax rates, Meals and entertainment changes, Section 179/Bonus depreciation, and Qualified business income deduction.
Bio:
Patrick Paulus, CPA is a founding partner with Capitol Tax and Accounting Group LLC. He was with a large regional accounting firm prior to founding Capitol Tax and Accounting Group with Brian Loeck. He has provided assurance, accounting, consulting and tax services for retail, construction, service, and real estate industries. Pat also works with individuals on tax issues specific to their needs including pass-through business income, tax planning, compliance, consulting, and tax return preparation. Pat is a certified public accountant and holds Bachelor of Science Degrees in Accounting and Finance from Valparaiso University. He and his wife Dana live in Monona, Wisconsin with their golden retriever, Enzo.

Section News
- New IEEE-Young Professionals Affiliate has been approved: Thanks to all who signed the petition and to Nate Toth for organizing the Affiliate. We look forward to many new YP events in the near future. In celebration of the new group, the June ECN/Section meeting will provide up to two free drinks for any YP member who attends.

Upcoming Meetings
- June Section Meeting/Ethics Seminar: This seminar is for anyone interested in learning more about the Engineering Ethics. However, because of the requirement of a 2-hour course in Ethics for the State Professional Engineering re-certification, it will require a more formal structure. Please let other colleagues in related fields know about this opportunity.
- June ECN/Section Meeting: This event will be held at the Brink Lounge on East Washington in what is becoming a hot area for local start ups and an emerging entrepreneurial center. The basis for the event is the new Federal tax law that has financial implications for businesses, including Consultants and startups. We have chosen the 5:30 time slot at a venue with a cash bar so that those with full-time jobs could attend. Sign up soon, space is limited.

The first Thursday of January, March, May, September and November is reserved for a meeting on a topic selected from a broad range including such areas as technology, science, history, culture and leisure.

IEEE-MSN-ECN Networking Meetings
- Purpose: Presentations, Discussions, networking
- Date: First Thursday of even-numbered months
- Time: 11:45 AM to 1:00 PM
- Location: Sector67, 2100 Winnebago Street (East Side of Madison)
- Parking: Park in lot or on Winnebago Street.
- Process: Members are encouraged to make introductions, describe endeavors, and make request for: contacts in target companies, needs, resources.

Membership Upgrades
Those interested in upgrading their IEEE membership level should send their resumes or other information showing five years of significant performance in an IEEE-designated field to Charles J Gervasi via email at cj(at)cgervasi.com. Madison Section Board will attempt to find Senior IEEE members knowledgeable in the applicant’s area of practice who may be able to provide references. You are invited to attend the informal networking portion of the monthly Section meetings (starting at 11:30am) to meet the Section Board members and discuss intentions.

The IEEE-Madison Section of the IEEE is a section in Region 4 of the IEEE-USA organized to serve IEEE members in the Madison, WI area with over 600 members.
