Title : IEEE initiatives in emerging technologies and reproducible research
Abstract: Fast growth of technologies in scope of IEEE requires the coordination of efforts across the entire organization. These technologies are first identified and nurtured by the thought leaders and later supported by the self-organizing communities. The organically-grown related communities engage in events, publications, position papers, newsletters and develop technology portfolios to pursue joint activities that couldn’t be easily launched by individual Societies and Councils. As the new technologies are transforming the research landscapes, the data storage, and computing and processing tools are becoming more powerful, efficient and affordable across many areas of science and engineering. As a result, research papers are being published at an increasing rate. However, this output will have lasting impact only if it is reproducible. Reproducible research (RR) embraces the notion that the ultimate research product (such as paper, report, etc.) needs to contain full disclosure of the environment used to produce the results. This will include the code, data, experimental and laboratory conditions etc. needed to reproduce the results and possibly expand it by others. However, specialized support services are needed to support such RR environment. DataPort and Code Ocean are the two companion initiatives across IEEE that provide new opportunities in this area. IEEE DataPort offers many benefits to authors, researchers, and members of the global technical community. It stores datasets up to 2TB in size, facilitates data analytics through integration with AWS (Amazon Web Services), provides Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) for uploaded datasets and analyses, manages Data Competitions and enables communication with the dataset owner. Code Ocean is a cloud-based executable research platform that enables users to upload and share their code to discover, view, and execute it in real-time, increase visibility and credibility for research and collaborate with colleagues using different types of programming languages. The code is linked to the source article in IEEE Xplore.
