Two-day Tutorial on Machine Learning and Evolutionary Optimization - Foundations, Recent Trends and Future Challenges
We are living in an era when machine learning is continually transforming the day to day lives of people from nearly all social strata and has become more of a household term than a research jargon. Modern developments in machine learning have caused a paradigm shift in the realms of supervised learning and classifier design methods. This tutorial will begin with a primary introduction to basic classifier systems including the k-nearest neighbor (k-NN), support vector machines (SVMs), and multilayer perceptron (MLP) models. The tutorial will then provide an eye-opener on the deep learning paradigm and the deep neural architectures along with some of their interesting applications. In the same context, this tutorial will discuss the derivative free and evolutionary optimization algorithms. Some hands-on experiments on classification and optimization with the discussed algorithms will be demonstrated. The session will conclude with a discussion on a number of open problems which the participants will be encouraged to take up as their future research endeavour.
