1. Basslink Project - connecting the transmission systems of Tasmania and Victoria

ABSTRACT
From inception through to operation, this session will go through the history of the Basslink project, a 500MW HVDC interconnector linking the HV transmission systems of Tasmania and Victoria. The developers of the project overcame many challenges to get the project operational, the largest environmental assessment ever for an Australian project, the first project with netgain targets and installing the longest submarine power cable in the world are just a few of the challenges. The talk & presentation will cover the experiences of planning, constructing and operating the largest power project in Australia during the last 20-years.
About the Speaker
Malcolm Eccles is the CEO and Managing Director of the Basslink Group of companies based in Melbourne, Australia. He has previously worked in senior management & engineering roles for both Siemens Energy and British Nuclear Fuels Ltd. and has global experience. Mr. Eccles is also a director of CityGas in Singapore, non-executive director of Gippsland Water in Victoria, director and executive committee member of the International Cable Protection Committee Ltd (“ICPC”) and He also chairs the HSSE (health, safety, security and environment) committee for CitySpring group. Mr Eccles is a Chartered Electrical Engineer and senior member of the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and a member of the Institute of Engineering Technology (IET). He is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a member of the Chartered Management Institute (UK). He holds a Master of Science degree (MSc) in Electrical Engineering and Management Studies, a Post Graduate Diploma in Project Management, a Post Graduate Diploma in Strategic Management and is also NEBOSH qualified in occupational health and safety. He is also a past attendee of the prestigious ‘Advanced Management Program’ delivered by Henley Management College (UK).
