Autonomous Robotics: From Perception to Racing
The IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter, in collaboration with ISL RoboRacer, invites you to “Autonomous Robotics: From Perception to Racing”, an evening of a live racing car demonstration, networking and opportunities to get involved with IEEE RAS and ISL RoboRacer.
The event will feature a technical talk by Dr. Oscar De Silva, Chair of the IEEE RAS Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter, followed by a live demonstration of the ISL RoboRacer autonomous racing platform and the team’s recruitment and orientation session.
ISL RoboRacer is Memorial University’s student autonomous racing team based in the Intelligent Systems Lab. The team is developing a 1/10-scale autonomous race car capable of perceiving the track, making driving decisions, and racing without a human driver, with the goal of competing in RoboRacer competitions in 2027.
Whether you are interested in robotics, autonomous systems, software, electronics, mechanical design, controls, media, sponsorship, or simply want to see an autonomous race car in action, this is an opportunity to meet the team, see the platform up close, and learn how you can get involved.
Open to all MUN students. No prior robotics experience is required. Light refreshments will be provided.

Dr. Oscar De Silva, Ph.D., P.Eng., SMIEEE.
Dr. Oscar De Silva, Ph.D., P.Eng., SMIEEE, is an Associate Professor in the Department of
Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada.
His research focuses on resilient sensing and navigation for autonomous aerial and maritime
systems, combining model-based and data-driven approaches with field experimentation.
At Memorial, he leads an NSERC-funded research program in autonomous navigation and
collaborates with the American Bureau of Shipping on multi-sensor sea-ice sensing and
navigation for Arctic vessel operations, and with the National Research Council Canada Flight
Research Laboratory on multi-sensor navigation and perception aboard the NRC Bell 412
research aircraft.
His professional service includes membership on the NSERC Discovery Grants Evaluation
Group, serving as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and
Engineering, and leadership within IEEE, including as former Chair of the IEEE Newfoundland
and Labrador Section and Founding Chair of its Robotics and Automation Society Chapter.
His work bridges academia, government, and industry to translate advances in autonomous
navigation into real-world operations in challenging environments.
