IEEE NL WIE Graduate Lunch Hour
Take a break from your academic routine and join the IEEE Newfoundland and Labrador Section Women in Engineering (WIE) for a relaxed lunch hour with fellow graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.
The session will feature Dr. Kusal Tennakoon (Member, IEEE), who will present a brief talk titled “Beyond the Degree: What Graduate School Actually Prepares You For.” He will share insights into how the skills, discipline, and problem-solving mindset developed during graduate studies have supported his career in industry.
The lunch hour will also provide an opportunity to connect with other graduate students and postdoctoral researchers through conversations, interactive activities, and games.
All graduate students, regardless of discipline or stage of study, and postdoctoral researchers are welcome.

Dr. Kusal Tennakoon (Member, IEEE)

Harsh Environment Research and Digital Research Center (HET&DRC)
ABS Canada, Inc.
Dr. Tennakoon is an Engineer, Technology at the ABS Harsh Environment Technology and Digital Research Center (HET&DRC) in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, where he contributes to developing autonomous and intelligent systems for the safe operation of maritime vessels in harsh environments.
Dr. Tennakoon received his B.Sc. (Hons.) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, in 2016, and his M.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering specializing in robotics from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2020. In 2026, he completed his PhD at Memorial University of Newfoundland, where his research concentrated on vision-based localization, landmark detection, and GPS-denied navigation of robotic platforms.
