Guided tour of the University of Alberta’s District Energy System


Dear IEEE NCS Members,

We’re excited to invite you to a guided tour of the University of Alberta’s District Energy System – one of the largest and most advanced systems in Canada.

Discover how the University centralizes its utility services to achieve greater efficiency, cost savings, and reduced environmental impact.

On this exclusive tour, you will:

  • Visit the Heating Plant, where steam is generated to heat the campus and support two steam turbine generators
  • Explore the Cooling Plant, where medium-voltage chillers produce chilled water for campus-wide use
  • Walk through the underground utility corridors and see the unique mini-motorbikes used by operations staff
  • Gain insights into the 13.8 kV distribution system, including:
    • Switchgear and switching equipment
    • Cables and protection systems
    • Protective relaying and metering
    • System design that ensures high flexibility and reliability

Tour Policy:

  • Participants must be 18 years of age or older
  • Full-length pants and closed-toe shoes are required
  • Hard hats, safety glasses, and hearing protection will be provided
  • Photography and video recording are not permitted
