Dear IEEE Members, we are pleased to share that Prof Xiaoli Bai, from Dept. Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Rutgers University, USA, will be giving a presentation during her visit to University of Chile. Although this is an external activity, the invitation has kindly been extended to IEEE Chile Centro members who wish to attend. The talk is organized by Prof. Martin Adams (Zoom link available upon request).
Title: Orbit Propagation and Estimation of Non-Cooperative Space Objects under Sensing Uncertainty
Speaker: Prof Xiaoli Bai, from Dept. Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Rutgers University, USA
Date & Time: Wednesday 20 May 12:00 – 13:00 and also 14:30 – 15:30
Location: Sala de Seminarios, Piso 2, DIE, FCFM, Universidad de Chile
This talk presents an uncertainty-aware Physics–ML fusion framework for orbit propagation, which integrates physics-based modeling with machine learning. The framework leverages empirical physical models as structured priors while learning model corrections from data. The resulting approach improves prediction accuracy and provides calibrated uncertainty estimates, which are critical in space situational awareness. The estimation of unknown, non-cooperative space objects during proximity operations is also presented. This integrates a nonlinear filtering backbone with structured datadriven models that capture the characteristics of rigid-body motion.
