Abstract of talk

In this era of robotics, each and every field in the industry is moving towards robotics and automation. Robotics is adding automation to several agricultural sectors. Coconut production is one among the several sectors of agricultural industry. As the coconut palm growers are struggling with the acute shortage of human coconut tree climbers to climb and harvest the coconuts, many are working towards possible alternatives to help them handle this situation. In this context the problems associated with the shortage of human coconut tree climbers in depth are analysed. The details of various existing mechanical models available in the market and how robotics and automation could be a possible solution for this entire problem is also presented.

As a case study, the development and implementation of the novel unmanned robotic coconut tree climber and harvester built at Humanitarian Technology (HuT) Labs, Amrita University, is also discussed.

  • First part of the talk discusses agricultural robotics and several existing robotics and automation solutions to various agricultural sectors
  • Followed by problems associated with coconut tree climbing and the existing solutions
  • Case study of design and implementation of the unmanned robotic coconut tree climber
