Technical Musings in Pro Audio and Musical Electronics
On Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at 6:30 PM ET, the IEEE Consultants’ Network of Northern New Jersey will host a presentation on Technical Musings in Pro Audio and Musical Electronics.
About the Topic
The worlds of professional audio and musical electronics often overflow with folklore and myths around gear that musicians and audio engineers deeply care about. Behind the romance and storytelling, however, lie circuits with predictable behaviors, components that perform in specific ways, and engineering decisions that shape the sound we hear every day. Contrast this with circuit design from other fields, where performance and acceptance can always be objectively be tested and compared against an agreed-upon criteria.
In this lively and technically grounded presentation, Jim Julian will explore what really happens inside the equipment used by musicians, recording engineers, and audio professionals. Drawing on decades of experience spanning repair work as a teenager, and subsequently as a full-time professional working in data communications, medical devices, and quality systems engineering, Jim will separate fact from fiction while celebrating the creativity and quirks that make musical electronics so fascinating.
About the Speaker
James "Jim" Julian of Jim Julian Unlimited, LLC, graduated from NJIT as an electrical engineer (BSEE). Self-taught in electronics, he worked professionally as an electronic technician at 16 in a local music store, and continued there through college. Upon graduation, he started as an electronic design engineer at RCA Astro Electronics, designing custom test equipment for communication satellites. He then continued as an analog, digital, and firmware designer, as well as holding positions in engineering management, product management, and quality engineering at Timeplex, Datascope, VitalCom, GE Healthcare, and Stryker. His parallel career in quality engineering includes expertise in regulatory requirements for FDA-approved medical devices. He is a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt. In addition to consulting, he is the founder of Uncool Audio, a new pro-audio hardware venture, currently in development. Creatively, he is a drummer, and a lead vocalist. He is also a commercial and fine art photographer and videographer. Find out more at jimjulian.com, photos.jimjulian.com or on YouTube at jimjulian.tv.
