Dr. William D. Phillips is an American physicist recognized for pioneering laser cooling and trapping of atoms, a breakthrough that revolutionized atomic physics. He shared the 1997 Nobel Prize in Physics with Steven Chu and Claude Cohen-Tannoudji for developing techniques to slow and cool atoms using laser light.
Dr. Phillips is a NIST Fellow and Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland, where his work enabled advances such as Bose-Einstein condensates and ultra-precise atomic clocks.
