Strategies and Techniques for Arc Flash Hazard Mitigation: Enhancing Workplace Safety

This presentation provides a comprehensive overview of arc flash hazards, including their causes and potential safety and financial consequences. It explores the key factors that determine the severity of arc flash incidents, such as equipment design, fault current magnitude, and duration of the fault. Various mitigation methods will be discussed, highlighting traditional protection techniques such as overcurrent and differential relays, alongside modern advancements, including optical sensors and ultra-fast earthing switches that enhance safety by quickly isolating faults and minimizing energy exposure during an incident.

Additionally, the presentation reviews applicable standards, including CSA Z462,  NFPA 70E and IEEE 1584, which guide industry safety practices. Practical examples and case studies will be presented to illustrate the successful implementation of these techniques, ultimately equipping attendees with insights and strategies to enhance workplace safety against arc flash hazards.
