Title: 5G Standardization of AI/ML based positioning

Abstract: 

In recent years there has been strong momentum investigating the application of AI/ML to wireless communications in industry and academia. 3GPP 5G Rel-18 initiated the study of AI/ML for enhancing air interface functions. Rel-19 is the first 3GPP release to standardize AI/ML based features. For 6G, AI related capabilities are widely anticipated as new capabilities for IMT-2030.

In 3GPP Rel-18 study item and Rel-19 work item, AI/ML based positioning has been selected as a representative use case to standardize for 5G. This seminar provides a tutorial on AI/ML based positioning studied in Rel-18 and standardized Rel-19. First, the typical scenario is explained where the AI/ML based approach can provide large performance gain over traditional methods. Then AI life cycle management is introduced, which highlights the paradigm shift from traditional approach to AI/ML based approach. The architecture, signalling, and channel measurement are explained, which are introduced in Rel-19 to enable AI/ML based positioning. For aspects that are up to vendor implementation and not standardized, examples are provided to illustrate the AI/ML model design, model training techniques, model generalization, and model performance monitoring. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the superior positioning accuracy achievable with the AI/ML approach.

Biography:

YUFEI BLANKENSHIP (yufei.blankenship@ericsson.com) holds a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech, Virginia, USA. She has extensive experiences in telecom industry and is currently a Principal Researcher with Ericsson. Yufei has been actively participating in physical layer standardization with many years of experience in 3GPP. Her work spans numerous technical areas in 4G LTE and 5G NR, including positioning, AI/ML, Extended Reality (XR), Industry IoT (IIoT). For 3GPP Rel-18/Rel-19 physical layer AI/ML, she is the 3GPP RAN1 feature lead for AI/ML based positioning. In 2020 Yufei was recognized by Ericsson as an "Inventor of the Year" for her work with 3GPP 4G and 5G standards.
