·         Best PhD Thesis Competition Award 2024: Dr Isaac Rudden

·         Outstanding Engineer Award (< 15 Years): Dr Yutian Zhou

·         Outstanding Engineer Award (> 15 Years): Dr Ivana Kockar

·         Outstanding Volunteer Award: Dr Nan Chen

After the AWARD Ceremony, the elections results for the term 2025 – 2026 were announced by our Elections Committee Chair (and PES Chapter Past Chair), Jianing Li.

Congratulations to our new UK and Ireland PES Chapter Officers:

·         Daniel Donaldson – Chair

·         Nan Chen – Vice Chair

IEEE PES UK&I Seminar: "Can machine learning help secure power systems? 10:30 am - 11:30 am, Wednesday, 4th of December 2024, The University of Manchester & Online

During this year's AGM, the IEEE PES UK&I Chapter organised a technical talk "Can machine learning help secure power systems?" given by Dr Panagiotis Papadopoulos.

This presentation highlighted the challenges faced in future power systems with high penetration of converter connected units, in terms of their dynamic behaviour, and discussed methods and tools to tackle them, inspired to a large extent by machine learning. Such methods can enable system operators to consider detailed dynamics in cases where the computational effort needed is otherwise prohibitive. Two main aspects were discussed related to: i) how do we model and characterize the complex and uncertain dynamic behaviour in power systems with high converter penetration and ii) how machine learning can enable fast and informative dynamic security assessment with focus on how to build trust in such methods going beyond the notion that machine learning is simply a powerful black-box predictor.

IEEE DLP Lecture: "Holistic approach to modelling and analysis of sustainable integrated power networks", 11th Dec 2024, The University of Manchester & Online

The IEEE PES UK&I Chapter organised a seminar under the IEEE Distinguished Lecturer Programme on the topic of “Holistic approach to modelling and analysis of sustainable integrated power networks” given by Prof. Jovica V. Milanovic, Dipl.Ing., MSc, PhD, DSc, CEng, FIET, FIEEE, Head of Department, IEEE PES Vice President, Publications. This hybrid event was hosted on 11th Dec 2024, at The University of Manchester & Online via Teams

This presentation first briefly introduced some of the key characteristics of future net-zero, sustainable power systems and the need for holistic (multi parameter, multi criteria and multi system)  approach to solving the identified challenges and then illustrate, as an example, a holistic approach to multicriteria multi system analysis  of net zero power systems focusing on applications of nondeterministic approaches, use of data analytics and  machine learning. It aims, above all, to stimulate multidisciplinary research in the area of modelling and analysis of power and energy systems by identifying existing and foreseen challenges,  and opportunities to  contribute to solving them through joint thinking and effort.

More updates will be soon on: here.

IEEE PES UK&I Chapter News Published on IEEE Region 8 Newsletter

The IEEE PES UK&I Chapter was mentioned for three times in the IEEE Region 8 News September 2023. Details can be found in page 3 (Editor’s Column), 4, and 6.

The Power and Energy Society (PES) provides the world’s largest forum for sharing the latest in technological developments in the electric power industry, for developing standards that guide the development and construction of equipment and systems, and for educating members of the industry and the general public. Members of the Power and Energy Society are leaders in this field and they — and their employers — derive substantial benefits from involvement with this unique and outstanding association. Its mission is to “…be the leading provider of scientific and engineering information on electric power and energy for the betterment of society, and the preferred professional development source for our members”; our Chapter executes this mission in the UK and Ireland region.

PES embraces aspects pertaining to research, development, planning, design, construction, maintenance, installation and operation of equipment, structures, materials and power systems for the safe, sustainable, economic and reliable conversion, generation, transmission, distribution, storage and usage of electric energy, including its measurement and control.

We organise technical, professional development and social activities, including technical talks, conferences and workshops, industrial visits, career development activities for student and young professionals and member specific activities. We welcome volunteers to help us organise or collaborate on activities and events, share ideas and provide feedback or provide us with financial funding to support our Chapter activities.

More details can be found in our official website: here. We look forward to contribute the UK&I PES community with you!
