Distinguished Lecture: 3GPP Standards in IoT with Dr. Majid Butt – RSVP Today!

Dear Valued Member,

The IEEE UAE ComSoc Chapter and IEEE Central Texas ComSoc Chapter are pleased to invite you to a distinguished lecture on cutting-edge developments in IoT technologies.

Join us for a talk by Dr. Majid Butt, Senior Staff Research Scientist at Nokia, USA, and an adjunct Research Professor at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland.

The lecture will discuss the need for a novel system design for AIoT, distinct from the 5G New Radio design, to accommodate the unique characteristics of low-cost, small-form-factor devices.

We hope you can join us!

Date: Thursday, November 14, 2024
Time: 8:00 AM Central Time / 5:00 PM UAE Time

Energy harvesting IoT Devices: 3GPP Standardization Activities

Dr. Majid Butt
Dr. Majid Butt

Senior staff research scientist, Nokia, USA

Ambient internet of things (IoT) is the network of devices which harvest energy from ambient sources for powering their communication. After decades of research on operation
of these devices, Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has started discussing energy harvesting technology in cellular networks to support massive deployment of IoT devices at low
operational cost. This talk provides a timely update on 3GPP studies on ambient energy harvesting devices. The talk emphasizes that the AIoT technology will require a new system design approach as compared to New Radio (NR) system design in 5G as AIoT devices are low cost, small form factor devices and don’t possess the device capabilities of NR devices.

M. Majid Butt is a senior staff research scientist at Nokia, USA, and an adjunct Research Professor at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. Prior to that, he has held various positions at the University of Glasgow, U.K., Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, and Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute, Germany. He has authored more than 80 peer-reviewed articles and contributed to more than 100 filed/granted patents in cellular networks domain. He was declared outstanding Nokia inventor of the year for the years 2021, 2022, and 2023. Dr. Butt was a recipient of the Marie Curie Alain Bensoussan Post-Doctoral Fellowship from the European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics. He has served as an associate editor for IEEE Communication Magazine and serves as an associate editor for IEEE Open Journal of the Communication Society and IEEE Open Journal of Vehicular Technology. He is a senior member of IEEE and an IEEE COMSOC distinguished speaker for the class of 2022-2025. He was industry program chair for IEEE WCNC 2023 and 2024.

We look forward to seeing you on 14th November!

Best wishes

Diana W. Dawoud
Chair, IEEE UAE Section ComSoc/SPS Joint Chapter
