Fwd: IEEE 5G Community Development Outreach

****** This email is being sent out on behalf of James Irvine and Alex Wyglinski. Please forward to your members to encourage participation in the IEEE 5G Initiative. Thank you. *******

Dear Colleague,

As you know, many different groups within the IEEE are working on technologies for 5G.  One of the key features of 5G is that it will have much more of a vertical approach, going well beyond wireless access to encompass a very wide range of applications. To try to raise awareness in the community in general of all that IEEE is doing in this area, we have started the IEEE 5G Initiative (http://5g.ieee.org/) and the IEEE 5G Technical Community, and we invite your involvement. We seek volunteers who are industry leaders, innovators, and researchers from the industry and academic communities to collaborate and exchange ideas in this emerging technology, to help drive standards and rapid deployment. Whether you are currently working on 5G, or just interested in how it might affect your technology domain, we hope you will join the community and contribute.

As with the development and deployment of 5G itself, we have quite a lot we want to do and are moving fast. We are interested in having volunteers work with us:

  •          To identify 5G technical architectures, challenges and requirements.
  •          To develop the future roadmap for anticipated paradigm shifts (evolutionary and revolutionary).
  •          To contribute and help run the IEEE 5G Newsletter, to be launched in Q1 2017. We need Editorial Advisory Board members and authors of original content.
  •          To help organize IEEE 5G Summits, a series of high impact one-day events in emerging technology areas (www.ieee-5gsummit.org).
  •          To help engage startup companies.
  •          To get involved in standardization – a number of IEEE standards already address 5G, and a focus of the initiative is to support further standardization efforts in the area.

IEEE has been at the forefront of emerging technologies for 50 years. We hope you will join us to build a vibrant, global IEEE 5G community at what is a key stage of the definition of 5G.

Yours sincerely,

James Irvine (j.m.irvine@ieee.org)
