Advanced Power Electronics and Electric Machines Packaging, Thermal Management, and Reliability for Electric-Drive Vehicles

Abstract: Electronics, power electronics, and electric machines are becoming important for an array of mobility/transportation, renewable energy and energy efficiency applications. In this presentation, I will introduce NREL and my group. I will describe some metrics, challenges, and opportunities for power electronics, electric machines, and electric traction-drive systems for light-, medium-, and heavy-duty vehicle applications. After that, I will give an overview of my group’s research activities in power electronics, electric machines and integrated (electric) traction-drive systems. This includes thermal management, thermomechanical reliability, state-of-health monitoring, and power module design, development, fabrication, and characterization aspects. Then, I will cover the power electronics thermal management experiences and background in some detail, including fluid-based cooling technologies, and efforts at both the power module- and inverter/converter level.
