Celebrate International Women In Engineering Day – IEEE Webinar: Trustworthy Machine Learning for Power System Situational Awareness, 3-4 pm on 21st June 2024, online
Speaker: Dr. Tabia Ahmad, PhD from Electrical and Electronic Engineering, The University of Manchester
Abstract: The electric power system is witnessing significant transformations towards an integrated, active, and ubiquitously sensed cyber-physical system. An abundance of data from phasor measurement units (PMU), point on wave (POW) devices and digital disturbance recorders offers tremendous opportunities as well as scientific challenges for situational awareness of power systems. Also, to mitigate climate change, power systems worldwide are increasingly moving towards more and more renewable energy (RE) generation which might lead to complex and uncertain operations. Building on theoretical foundations, this talk aims to provide an overview of machine learning (ML) and data analytic tools for better monitoring of converter interfaced RE integrated power systems, especially in the event of catastrophic failures. The key highlights of this talk include revisiting the nature of field power system measurement data and discussing how this may affect the accuracy of downstream analytics such as power system dynamic stability. The potential of ML leveraging spatio-temporal data for specific problem of detecting cascading failures due to transient response of power systems in RE integrated power systems will also be discussed. The talk concludes on how trust can be built in ML based techniques to support operation of future power systems.

IEEE Webinar: Resilient investment planning in local electrical energy systems under static and dynamic islanding security constraints, 11th June
Speaker: Shahab Dehghan from Newcastle University
Abstract: The integration of frequency dynamics into the investment and operational planning of local electrical energy systems is crucial for ensuring system security in post-contingency states. However, incorporating both static and dynamic security constraints in such planning is challenging under conditions of low-frequency high-impact and high-frequency low-impact uncertainties. This complexity arises from the highly non-linear and non-convex nature of the analytical closed forms of frequency metrics (e.g., frequency nadir) and power flow constraints. To address this issue, this research introduces two algorithms designed to decompose the uncertainty-aware resilient investment planning problem of local electrical energy systems into multiple levels, thereby enhancing computational tractability and optimality. Additionally, the sensitivity of decisions at each level is captured through corresponding dual cutting planes, which help model feasible secure regions. This approach not only ensures the optimal determination and placement of inertia services but also accelerates the convergence of the proposed decomposition algorithms. The performance of these uncertainty-aware algorithms has been efficiently and effectively tested and verified across different networks under various operating scenarios.

IEEE PES UK&I Chapter News Published on IEEE Region 8 Newsletter
The IEEE PES UK&I Chapter was mentioned for three times in the IEEE Region 8 News September 2023. Details can be found in page 3 (Editor’s Column), 4, and 6.
The Power and Energy Society (PES) provides the world’s largest forum for sharing the latest in technological developments in the electric power industry, for developing standards that guide the development and construction of equipment and systems, and for educating members of the industry and the general public. Members of the Power and Energy Society are leaders in this field and they — and their employers — derive substantial benefits from involvement with this unique and outstanding association. Its mission is to “…be the leading provider of scientific and engineering information on electric power and energy for the betterment of society, and the preferred professional development source for our members”; our Chapter executes this mission in the UK and Ireland region.
PES embraces aspects pertaining to research, development, planning, design, construction, maintenance, installation and operation of equipment, structures, materials and power systems for the safe, sustainable, economic and reliable conversion, generation, transmission, distribution, storage and usage of electric energy, including its measurement and control.
We organise technical, professional development and social activities, including technical talks, conferences and workshops, industrial visits, career development activities for student and young professionals and member specific activities.
