Abstract: Historically, electric power grids are supplied by conventional synchronous generator-based large power plants such as fossil, nuclear, and hydropower plants. Thus, frequency control and contingency management is not very challenging as such systems have abundant mechanical inertia. However,  as the grid evolves with increasing penetrations of inverter-based renewable resources that do not inherently provide inertia, innovative techniques must emerge to maintain the system's stability and reliability in evolving grids. Although growth in inverter-based resources effectively reduces the amount of grid inertia, multiple solutions have been effectively tested and implemented in some parts of the world to maintain the system's reliability. Therefore,  this lecture provides an overview of the role of grid inertia in handling contingencies and maintaining system reliability and how the system reliability is improved in the evolving grid with the increasing deployment of inverter-based renewable energy resources.
