Perseid meteor shower viewing!
Update: Location has changed, it is now in Whitewater State Park
Once a year Earth passes through debris left behind by the Comet Swift-Tuttle. This produces a meteor shower that peaks in mid-August. This year the peak will be Saturday night (August 12th) into Sunday morning.
A viewing party will be held at Whitewater State Park. The state park service is coordinating a general event for everyone and there should be a speaker there to talk about the meteor shower (https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/event.html?id=74514). I will arrive by 8pm and stay until around midnight. The meteors will be visible with the naked eye, I will also be setting up a telescope so we can use the opportunity to glimpse some other night sky features.
This event is for everyone of all ages, family, friends, and kids are all welcome. All I ask is that everyone be respectful of others viewing, this includes not using light when asked.
To see most objects in the night sky our eyes will need to fully adjust to the darkness. Red light can be used to help see in the dark without wrecking your night vision. For observing meteors, red light only will be an absolute must. If you have flashlights, or headlamps, that produce pure red light please bring them. I will have red glow sticks for everyone who attends.
This event will be outside, in an area with no artificial light, at night, plan accordingly. Here is a handy diagram of things to consider: https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/TacBJu49QvM7PsKqMATrii.png
If weather is bad I will send out a cancellation notice.
Regardless of the weather I recommend wearing long pants and a long-sleeved shirt as they can help a lot with the mosquitoes and brush. Spraying the outside of your clothes with bug spray is also a good way to keep mosquitoes away.
Please register so I have a head count.
While I have never seen it enforced vehicles parking in the state park lot require a permit: https://reservemn.usedirect.com/MinnesotaWeb/Passes/Passes.aspx
