July President's Message from
Martín Llamas Nistal

A Message from the President:

The first of the two annual Board of Governors meetings was held last June. Several interesting topics were discussed, but I would like to highlight three proposals that were approved.

First, the discount for members of the IEEE Education Society of 0.9 times the IEEE base registration fee for registration at all conferences sponsored by our Society.

This means that if, for example, the normal rate for a conference is $600, the IEEE member rate is $500, the Education Society member rate will be $450. This adds another benefit for all members of our Society. This discount will apply to those conferences whose MoUs are signed on or after July 1 of this year, so its effective application may take a few months.

Summary of June 2023
Board of Governors Meeting

On June 26, 2023, the IEEE Education Society (EdSoc) Executive Committee (ExCom) and the IEEE EdSoc Board of Governors (BoG) met for the first of two annual meetings each year in Baltimore, Maryland, co-located with the IEEE ASEE conference. These meetings of leadership occur to discuss changes to the Education Society Governing Documents, engage with new ideas, and work through other society-related matters.

Four motions were passed during the IEEE EdSoc BoG meeting alongside many other topics that were discussed.

  • To commission the IEEE Education Society Awards Committee to work toward a new award for Best Doctoral Thesis in Engineering Education.
  • To include a new discount for IEEE Education Society members to attend our financially sponsored conferences (EDUCON, EDUNINE, LWMOOCS, TALE & FIE).
  • To add the Strategic Planning Committee to the Society Bylaws.
  • To approve the slate of recommended new initiative projects from the first round in 2023.
The next EdSoc meeting will take place in College Station, Texas, USA, co-located with IEEE FIE in October 2023.

Call for IEEE Transactions on Education Associate Editors

Interested in novel and meaningful ways to improve your teaching in the classroom? Are you willing to support your favorite engineering discipline by strengthening the knowledge and skills of their new PEs? Can’t get enough of reading critical, technical work of your colleagues’ contributions to engineering education? Then please consider donating your time as an Associate Editor for the Education Society’s IEEE Transactions on Education (ToE).

In this capacity, you will be asked to solicit 3-5 reviewers about 3 times a year to evaluate a manuscript submitted to ToE. After engaging reviewers for their assessments, you will decide whether to accept the work (with/without major revisions) or turn it back with a short statement on its shortcomings. In the end, you will benefit from the experience and even your administration will notice your work to promote the engineering field.

IEEE Teaching Excellence Hub Spotlight

"Engineering faculty members must multitask many different responsibilities. The intent of the IEEE Teaching Excellence Hub (TEH)  is to ease the burden in one of these key areas . . . Teaching, by creating a centralized hub of curated and developed resources that can aid faculty members in becoming more effective teachers. It has been an honor to contribute to this critical faculty tool and I encourage all engineering faculty to review the resources and to submit their own best practices to share with other faculty. The result we're working to achieve are graduating students who are prepared to practice and the TEH can play a critical role." - Burt Dicht

Burt Dicht currently serves as the Managing Director of Membership for the National Space Society and manages their office at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Dicht retired from the position of Director of Student and Academic Education Programs for the IEEE in October 2022. In this capacity, Dicht was responsible for the development and implementation of educational programs for engineering faculty, university students and pre-university educators and students. Dicht began his career in the aerospace industry at Northrop Grumman in 1982 and during his aerospace career he made important design contributions on the F-5E/F, F-20A, YF-23A and F-18E/F projects. Dicht also worked for Rockwell’s Space Transportation Systems Division and interned at the Kennedy Space Center while in college. Dicht is a member of the IEEE-HKN Eta Chapter, the AIAA, is an ASME Fellow and he serves as a member of IEEE's Pre-University Education Coordinating Committee and on the IEEE-HKN The Bridge Editorial Board. Dicht received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Temple University and an M.A. in History from California State University, Northridge.
