TOUR OF THE GRAND RAPIDS WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANT

ALL MEMBERS OF THE IEEE WMS AND GUESTS (8 YEARS AND OLDER) ARE INVITED TO ATTEND

LOCATION

The plant, also known as the Grand Rapids Water Resource Recovery Facility, is located in Grand Rapids. The address is 1300 Market Ave SW, Grand Rapids MI 49503. Parking is available at the facility.

Tour

We are limited to 25 visitors. Each active IEEE member signing up for the tour may also sign up one or two non-IEEE guests that are 8 years or older. Their policy requires that anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a chaperone.

The tour begins indoors at 10 AM. Plan to arrive between 9:40 and 10:00 AM. If the weather is good we will also spend time touring outdoors.

Attire is casual. The plant is large, so you should wear comfortable walking shoes.

Optional Lunch

After the tour, those interested will meet for lunch at the Mr. Burger Restaurant located at 2101 Lake Michigan Dr. NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504. It is just west of Covell Ave. IEEE member’s lunch will be paid for by our WMS. Member guests will be expected to pay for their own lunch.

(For those needing PDH certificates for maintaining their PE licenses we are working on obtaining 1-2 credits from IEEE for attending this technical meeting/tour.)

GRAND RAPIDS WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANT FAQs

The facility was built in 1931. It collects and treats an average of 40 million gallons of wastewater each day. Treatment includes the extraction of bio-solids. Methane produced by an anaerobic digester is captured and turned into renewable natural gas. A combined heat and power system produces thermal energy to heat the digester tanks and provides electricity to power the facility.
