5/17/23 Seminar: UW-Madison’s new CDIS building and programs

IEEE Madison presents an update on UW-Madison’s new school of Computer, Data and Information Sciences (CDIS) building and academic programs  by Tom Erickson, Founding Director, CDIS

Wednesday May 17th 5:00 – 7:00 pm

Room 1240, Computer Sciences

1210 W Dayton St, Madison, WI

Founding director of CDIS[1] and current L&S Dean of Innovation and Strategy[2], Tom Erickson[3] will describe the features and layout of the new 350k ft2 CDIS building at University & Orchard St. and how they support CDIS academic programs.  Tom will also talk about design features that address sustainability and extreme weather.

A third-generation Wisconsin Badger, Tom earned a degree in electrical and computer engineering with honors from UW–Madison in 1980[4].  Before returning to his alma mater, he founded Boston-based Acquia, a software company that grew to $175M in revenue and 800 employees.  Tom has also held executive roles in Teleatlas (TomTom), Systinet (Mercury Interactive/HP), webMethods (Software AG), Baan (Infor), and MRO Software (IBM)[5].

Serving Chancellor Rebecca Blank’s advisory council, Tom co-chaired a working group on the future of computing at the university in 2018 which produced “Wisconsin in the Information Age.”   This led to the formation of CDIS in 2019 to combine our top ranked departments of computer sciences, statistics and library and information sciences (iSchool)[6].

The Computer Society is one of the top three IEEE Madison member groups[7]. About 24% of our almost 700 members belong to data and computer related societies. We hope to see you all there.

There are paid lots nearby (blue).

Green lots are free after 4:30 and many are only a short, pleasant walk.  A favorite is Lot 34 on the lake!
