Intel Sr. Princ. Eng. David Blankenbeckler, Rowhammer – The dirty secret of the DRAM industry

First discovered by Intel in 2012, Rowhammer is a DRAM issue whereby normal memory operations can corrupt memory. Initially thought to be a reliability problem, researchers in 2015 found that Rowhammer can deterministically corrupt memory and compromise the security of the system. At the time, DRAM suppliers claimed that DDR4 was Rowhammer free. In 2019, researchers found ways to circumvent the DRAM protection against Rowhammer on DDR4 and LPDDR4. Rowhammer is a challenging physics problem that gets worse as semiconductor geometries shrink. This talk will provide an overview of Rowhammer and explain why, even after more than 10 years, it’s still a security challenge for the industry.
