TOUR OF THE LAKE MICHIGAN FILTRATION PLANT

ALL MEMBERS OF THE IEEE WMS AND GUESTS 8 YEARS AND OLDER ARE INVITED TO TOUR THE LAKE MICHIGAN FILTRATION PLANT

 LOCATION

The plant is located in West Olive on the Lake Michigan shoreline where Lake Michigan Dr. dead-ends into Lakeshore Ave. The address is 17350 Lake Michigan Drive, West Olive, MI 49460. Free parking is available in their main parking lot off of Lake Michigan Drive. We will enter the building on the same side that the parking lot is located.

Tour

We are limited to 25 visitors. Each active IEEE member signing up for the tour may also sign up one or two non-IEEE guests that are 8 years or older.

The tour begins at 10 AM and lasts until about 11:45 AM. Plan to arrive between 9:40 and 10:00 AM. No photo ID is required, but there will be a sign in sheet. The tour is indoors. If the weather is good we may also spend a short time touring outdoors.

Attire is casual. The plant is large, so you should wear comfortable walking shoes.

Cameras are allowed but there will be a few things at the plant that they do not allow pictures of for security reasons. They will let us know when we cannot take pictures.

Optional Lunch

After the tour, those interested will meet for lunch at The Paisley Pig Gastropub restaurant located in Grand Haven about 7 miles north of the plant. The address is 501 Miller Dr, Grand Haven MI 49417. IEEE member’s lunch will be paid for by our WMS. Member guests will be expected to pay for their own lunch.

LAKE MICHIGAN FILTRATION PLANT FAQs

 The plant is a conventional treatment facility owned and operated by the city of Grand Rapids. It is located on 67 acres at the Lake Michigan shoreline and has a capacity of 25.2 million gallons per day. It supplies water to municipalities in Kent and Ottawa counties, serving a population of about 280,000 in a service area of 137 square miles. The plant is partially powered by an on-site 900 kilowatt ground-mounted solar array recently built on nearly three acres in the northwest corner of the property.
