REMINDER: WEST MI SECTION IEEE MEETING WED FEB 17

WEST MICHIGAN SECTION LIFE MEMBER AFFINITY GROUP VIRTUAL MEETING THIS WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 17, AT 1 PM EASTERN.

ALL IEEE MEMBERS AND THEIR GUESTS ARE INVITED.

TOPIC: HF Modulation Systems and Propagation

(Meeting will also be recorded for personal viewing later)

Speaker: Paul Denisowski of Rohde & Schwarz USA, Inc.

This live presentation covers two important aspects of HF (high frequency, typically 2-30 MHz) communications: the modulation types most commonly used for HF communications as well as the fundamentals of HF propagation. Many of our IEEE members are also radio amateurs or are interested in “ham” radio and this meeting should be of considerable interest to them. The presentation is being put on by Rohde and Schwarz, manufacturer of precision RF test and measurement equipment since the early 1930's. It is being co-sponsored by the Twin Cities, Northern New Jersey and West MI Sections.

Modulation types covered in this presentation include both double-sideband AM and single-sideband as well as narrowband FM. For digital modes, the use of amplitude shift keying (ASK) and frequency shift keying (FSK) is also discussed.

The propagation portion of this webinar starts with a general introduction to HF and the main HF propagation modes (direct wave/line of sight, ground or surface wave, and skywave). Since skywave is the most unique and widely used HF propagation mode, an introduction to the ionosphere and the characteristics of the different ionospheric layers is then provided, followed by a discussion of unusual ionospheric events and an overview of the different ways in which the state of the ionosphere can be quantified.

The presentation concludes with a short summary and a question and answers session.

After registering you will be sent a URL link to log in to the actual presentation this Wednesday or for personal viewing later. Anyone registering with this R&S link, we ask you to please send a copy of your confirmation email or URL to mwbird@outlook.com so we can keep track of our attendees from the West Michign section.

As the meeting is presented by an active Radio Amateur the level will be at the General/Extra class ham radio license. Members of the local amateur radio club as well as engineering students and even high school students are also invited to attend.
