Many of you may recall the interesting live talk Mike gave in downtown GR at GVSU in October 2018 on the St.  Ignace MI HVDC transmission facility and why it was essential to stabilizing the power grid in the Upper Peninsula and Northern Wisconsin.  Well, Mike is back for one more presentation to our West MI Section before he retires from ATC.  This time he will discuss the Benson Lake WI Static Var Compensator project that ATC managed and which went operational in 2017.  He will explain how the lightening-induced great UP blackout of 2011 showed the need for better voltage stability control in that region and take us through the Benson Lake project from initial planning to construction to commissioning.

A Static VAR Compensator is a set of electrical devices for providing fast-acting reactive power on high voltage electricity transmission networks.  SVCs are part of the Flexible AC transmission system device family, regulating voltage, power factor, harmonics and stabilizing the system.
