Section News
- PES/IAS: A Joint Power and Energy Society/Industry Applications Society Chapter has been approved for the Madison IEEE Section. Thanks to all of the PES/IAS members who received and signed the petition to create the society. The petition reached the required number of signatures in less than 24 hours after the notice was sent out. Together, there are approximately 170 IEEE-Madison members who are members of the PES/IAS or both Societies. Now is the time to get involved in the "ground floor" of a local professional engineering society and help define what its activities will be. The Chapter will have an initial organizing meeting in September and will need to elect officers and plan events. Please let Tom Kaminski (tjkaminski ( at ) ieee.org) know if you or the organization you work for are interested in helping to kick-off the new Chapter. We will need:
- Chapter Officers (Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary/Treasurer, Activities Chair).
- A meeting location or locations conveniently located close to most members.
- Industrial Outreach: Companies and organizations willing to help sponsor events or host meetings.
- Madison Section Officer Nominations Open: Greetings! The fall is upon us, which means that elections are coming up. Not just the fall mid-terms, but for the officers of IEEE-Madison. Our officer positions include Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer, Secretary, and Members At Large. Our officers run the local Section, manage its finances, schedule its meetings, and manage communications with membership. Being an officer of an IEEE section has, to me, been a very good experience. I have learned a lot, and have developed a great deal of respect for the organization. I believe that my fellow officers, both past and present will agree. One of my duties as Vice Chair is to organize elections and form/lead an officer nominating committee. Therefore, my ask this month is for a few volunteers for the Officer Nomination Committee. We will be tasked with finding folks to run for these positions. This will not be a heavy time commitment, but our duty is important. Please reach out to me if you would like to be on this committee, run for office, or volunteer your time in any other way. Or if you have any questions, please reach out to me. I can be reached by email at tothnj@gmail.com.
Thank you very much!
Nate Toth
Vice Chair, IEEE Madison
- Technical Support for Legislators: Because legislation affects the future of our engineering discipline, Clark Johnson and Hugh Schmidt are investigating ways for IEEE members to be more involved in helping legislators understand technology. One approach is to facilitate student meetings with legislators. Electrical engineering students can develop essential career skills while helping to educate lawmakers about technical issues that will affect engineering. Hugh and Clark are looking forward to bringing power engineering, environmental studies and law students together with faculty, staff and industry to meet with legislators this year. Collaborating with people outside their discipline will help students frame technical issues in terms that appeal to broader audiences. They will get a feel for the mechanics of lawmaking also by consulting with utility staff and political interest groups and by writing opinion pieces. Interested in participating? Contact Hugh or Clark via email to tjkaminski (at) ieee.org.

- September 12th, IEEE-Madison Young Professionals Kickoff Meeting: Hi Folks, Nate Toth here! IEEE Madison has formed a Young Professionals Affinity Group! And it is time to kick this off! We will hold our kickoff meeting on Wednesday September 12th. I will send out details as soon as they are finalized (by the 31st of August at the very latest). - November IEEE-Madison Section Meeting: On November 8th, Professor L. Jean Camp from the School of Informatics and Computing at Indiana University will be giving a talk on the security of Internet-of-Things (IoT). Professor Camp is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Her research focuses on the intersection of human and technical trust, leveraging economic models and human-centered design to create safe, secure systems. A venue for this talk has not yet been scheduled, but will likely be at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
