June IEEE Section Meeting "Engineers and Ethics"

- Two Hours PDH credit toward PE certification in the Ethics Category will be given to those who attend.

Talk:
The talk will start with a review the ethical standards that apply to design professional and discuss their key points. We then move on to examples of real life cases to help the attendees get a flavor of the many ethical issues that arise in the judicial system. The topics will be drawn from the following:
Topic:. Ethical Implications of self driving vehicles.
Topic: AI issues for ethical product design.
Topic: What do you do when you know management is violation personal information (ie Facebook selling info without customer's knowledge).
Bring your attention and questions for an evening of learning.
Bio:
Steve Nelson is a Shareholder in the Litigation and Risk Management Practice Group at Von Briesen & Roper in Milwaukee, WI. Steve has extensive experience in litigation and concentrates his practice in commercial litigation including construction, professional liability defense , civil and business disputes, contracts and lease disputes, toxic tort, OSHA counseling and citation defense, personal injury defense, product liability, and Wisconsin fair dealership law. He has litigated on behalf of clients involved in complex construction matters including tunnel and sewer construction, building construction, highway construction and matters involving professional negligence.

Section News
- New IEEE-Madison Groups are Forming: A Joint Chapter of the Power Engineering Society and Industry Applications Society is forming in the Madison Section. If you are interested in the planning for the groups' activities and structure, please contact Tom Kaminski (tjkaminski at ieee.org). Also a Young Professional group is forming as well. If you are currently a professional, but within 15 years of your undergraduate degree, your are eligible to sign the petition forming the group. Please contact Nate Toth (tothnj at gmail.com) to help.
- April Section Meeting Review: (Revies by Charles Gervasi) At our Apr 19, 2018 meeting, Dr. Chris Johnson spoke to us about unmanned aircraft systems (UASs). Drones are going to become even more common in the near future. VC investment in drones jumped in 2015. A good drone costs $800 today. Within five to ten years, they will become less expensive and possibly become as common as smartphones. There are experiments in making drones deliver first-aid devices, like AEDs. The drone could allow medics to direct lay people to deliver basic emergency medical attention while waiting for trained first responders to arrive. Insurance companies are investigating how images taken from drones could be used to observe flooding and possibly to assess hail damage to roofs.
Regulation is a huge issue for drones. Some companies do their research abroad to avoid the regulations. The FAA is in charge of regulating drones now, but the FAA’s perview is safety. The biggest issue facing drones is ethics. When people think of drones, the first think they think of is military drones. They also think of foul play. The majority of drones, however, are “workhorse” drones doing everyday tasks. Drones collect so much data, where they are used may influence the location of server centers because of the demands of processing and storing the large amounts of data collected by drones.

Upcoming Meetings
- PES/IAS and Young Professional Groups are Starting: Power technical talks always generate a lot of interest in the Section. It is time to start a local Chapter of the PES/IAS Societies and we are looking for your input. Please get in contact with Tom (see the notices above) if you have any ideas on how it should be organized, where it should meet, and what technical talks or events might be of interest. Also forming is a Young Professional Affiliates group -- it is hoped that those engineers and scientists in early stages of their careers can network with other young professionals and find support for their technical and life issues. Mostly the emphasis will be on social events, but other options are possible. Interested in helping? Please contact Nate at the above email address.
- No May Section Meeting: At this time, there are no scheduled May Section meetings.
- June Section Meeting/Ethics Seminar: This seminar is for anyone interested in learning more about the Engineering Ethics. However, because of the requirement of a 2-hour course in Ethics for the State Professional Engeering re-certification, it will require a more formal structure. Please let other colleagues in related fields know about this opportunity.
- June ECN/Section Meeting: We are planning to have a tax account discuss the changes in tax law and how they pertain to Consultants and Small Businesses. As of press time for the Newsletter, neither the location or the date had been chosen. It will likely be in the later half of June.

The third Thursday of January through May, and September through December is reserved for a meeting to provide recent research, developments, trends and/or innovations in one of our membership's technical areas.

Life Member Affinity Group
The first Thursday of January, March, May, September and November is reserved for a meeting on a topic selected from a broad range including such areas as technology, science, history, culture and leisure.

IEEE-MSN-ECN Networking Meetings
- Purpose: Presentations, Discussions, networking
- Date: First Thursday of even-numbered months
- Time: 11:45 AM to 1:00 PM
- Location: Sector67, 2100 Winnebago Street (East Side of Madison)
- Parking: Park in lot or on Winnebago Street.
- Process: Members are encouraged to make introductions, describe endeavors, and make request for: contacts in target companies, needs, resources.

Membership Upgrades
Those interested in upgrading their IEEE membership level should send their resumes or other information showing five years of significant performance in an IEEE-designated field to Charles J Gervasi via email at cj(at)cgervasi.com. Madison Section Board will attempt to find Senior IEEE members knowledgeable in the applicant’s area of practice who may be able to provide references. You are invited to attend the informal networking portion of the monthly Section meetings (starting at 11:30am) to meet the Section Board members and discuss intentions.

The IEEE-Madison Section of the IEEE is a section in Region 4 of the IEEE-USA organized to serve IEEE members in the Madison, WI area with over 600 members.
