Abstract: It is believed that emerging technologies changes the way electricity networks operate. This includes new challenges as well as opportunities for the electricity industry as well as customers. All sectors within the power industry could be affected differently but this presentation will focus on the impacts on distribution electricity networks. The presentation will give first an overview of emerging/disruptive technologies that are currently available in the market. Without going to the details of the battery technology, the focus is to identify the benefits of battery energy storage systems as behind the meter installation as well as grid-connected (utility scale) storage systems. Along the way, some research questions and new career opportunities will be raised.
Speaker: Daniel Eghbal is a Future Network Strategy Engineer at Energex and an adjunct research fellow at the School of ITEE, The University of Queensland. He received B.S. and M.S. degrees in power system engineering in Iran and PhD degree from Hiroshima University, Japan in 2009.
Prior to joining Energex, Daniel was with Queensland Geothermal Energy Centre of Excellence (QGECE), The University of Queensland. Where, he was working on the feasibility of connecting large-scale remotely located geothermal power to Queensland transmission network.
Since 2012, Daniel has been working with the Network Capital Strategy & Planning at Energex on medium to long-term planning for sub-transmission and distribution projects, and investigating the impacts of emerging technologies on electricity demand. In his current role, Daniel investigates the benefits and impacts of emerging technologies (mainly grid-connected battery storage systems).
Daniel has been collaborating with the PES research group at the University of Queensland, and co-supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students. Daniel is a Senior member of IEEE and the vice-chair of IEEE Queensland section since 2014.
