IEEE NZ Seminar

 Dear IEEE member

You are invited to attend the following IEEE free seminar.

Date & Time:

Monday 22 August,  12-1pm

Venue:

Lecture Theatre 403.403

Faculty of Engineering, University of Auckland

20 Symonds Street, Auckland

Presenter:

Dr Kenta Niwa

NTT Media Intelligence Laboratories, NTT Corporation, Japan

Title:

Microphone array signal processing and its interactive applications

Abstract:

Hardware technological evolution makes it possible to capture many acoustic signals and apply complex processing for e.g. source enhancement in real time. In this lecture, the state-pf-the-art source enhancement demonstrations are introduced after giving a lecture of basic theories of microphone array signal processing. The demonstrations are composed of (i) zoom microphone for pinpoint picking up distant sound sources, (ii) audio object collection for emphasizing the identified sport playing sound e.g. ball kicking sound in very noisy stadium, and (iii) acoustic immersion effect creation for 360-degrees video using smartphone.

 Bio:

Kenta Niwa is a research engineer at Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT). He received the B.E., M.E., and Ph.D. degrees from Nagoya University, Nagoya, Japan, in 2006, 2008, and 2014, respectively. Since joining NTT in 2008, he has been engaged in research on acoustic signal processing. He is now a Research Engineer at NTT Media Intelligence Laboratories.

He received the Awaya Prize by the Acoustical Society of Japan (ASJ) in 2010. He is a Member of IEEE, ASJ and the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE).
