Title:  Maintaining Sustainability in the Power Industry (with an eye on technology)  

Abstract: Technology has entered every facet of our industry and is causing change in everything from traditional concepts to emerging applications.  This presentation will provide a perspective of a large utility in North America on how to implement technology, provide options for our customers, and satisfy the regulators. Biography: Jonathan Sykes is the Senior Manager of System Protection at Pacific Gas and Electric Company, headquartered in San Francisco, California, USA. Jonathan received his academic and practitioner training in Arizona.  He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1982 from the University of Arizona and worked at Salt River Project, in Phoenix, Arizona for more than 25 years before joining PG&E in 2009.  He is a Professionally Licensed Electrical Engineer and Senior member of IEEE. Jonathan has been invited as Keynote to Electricity Engineer's Association 2016 Annual conference in Wellington and represents IEEE PES. Title:  Great Britain's Energy Systems Catapult Innovation and Experiences. Abstract: In this lecture Eric will share insights from his wide experience in the Communications sector, highlighting themes and challenges of relevance to the changing Power sector and for energy systems more widely. He will update on GB government initiatives to promote entrepreneurial behaviours and innovation in energy, and offer thoughts for the New Zealand context.

Biography: Eric Brown is  representing IET (UK) as a keynote for the 2016 EEA conference in Wellington. Educated in Canada, Eric has a BSc in Mathematics and Physics, a BEng in Electrical Engineering and an MSc in Electrical Engineering. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the IET. Eric joined Innovate UK, the lead government agency for promoting innovation, in April 2014 as Programme Manager of the new Energy Systems Catapult organisation. In this role he supported strategy development and planning and, in addition, led projects to build early capability and presence for the Energy Systems Catapult. In April 2015, when the Catapult was fully established, he became Interim Head of Strategy and Innovation.
