What else can you do in a year for the equivalent cash value of an IEEE Membership?

  1. Get that one professional training you wanted. just one. while you would have access to many events throughout the year as a member. and many more through the online courses offered at IEEE or fantablous discounts at highly valued external providers. Names you would willingly sell your car to join! (but members keep their cars)
  2. Buy a new smartphone--> yeah great, so you can play more games and take time away from improving your professional identity?
  3. See about 50 movies at multiplexes. --> but this does not add to who you are professionally! (you might do better to get a subscription to netflix and watch them from the comfort of your home)
  4. Get one flight return flight ticket to New Delhi if you are lucky. -> but you would like to do more at Delhi then just fly around. and that costs more.
  5. Get 1 membership at a international library? but most likely they are not going get you to connect to your professional peers or mentors?
  6. Buy less than 10 critical books of your profession? Instead of having access to all of them through the online books access.
  7. Buy less than 5 high quality shirts. but Shirts dont give you additional knowledge. at least not yet.
  8. You could Dine out about twice or thrice in a year at a real good place with people of your choice. Your membership can get you access to a hundred peer professionals globally. not just someone who is nearby, looking for a free meal. Join our different events and eat out regularly with good company.
  9. Register for one conference, assuming you come to know about it. Just Register.
  10. Certainly not Meet with interesting people from round the globe, round the year. Unless you are at the reception of a 5 Star hotel.

Interact with your investment

well, I think it is among the best investment decisions of the year.

Unlike your other investments, this one you can talk to, walk over shake hands, eat lunch with and the more you visit, the more you get out of it. it is a way of becoming a leader with great technical knowledge and content. Your managerial skills may have to retire, but your technical knowledge just becomes better and better.
